Most local businesses in Calicut are losing search traffic to competitors who aren’t better — they’re just more findable. The gap is usually a dozen small things, and almost all of them are free to fix.
I’ve audited enough local businesses around Kozhikode to know the pattern is remarkably consistent. The website is fine. The service is good. The reviews are decent. And the business is still invisible when someone three kilometres away searches for exactly what it sells.
This is the checklist I actually work through. Do it in order — the early items make the later ones matter more.
Start With Google Business Profile
If you do nothing else on this page, do this. For local searches, your Business Profile does more work than your website. It’s also the thing most businesses set up once in 2021 and never touched again.
- Claim and verify it. Unverified profiles get outranked by verified ones with worse reviews. This is not negotiable.
- Pick the most specific primary category. “Interior Designer” beats “Contractor.” Specificity wins local searches; breadth loses them.
- Set real hours, including holidays. Google demotes profiles it believes are inaccurate, and customers punish them harder.
- Add at least ten genuine photos. Your premises, your team, your actual work. Stock photography does nothing here.
- Fill in services and products individually. Each one is a surface that can match a search. Most businesses leave this blank entirely.
- Post something monthly. Not for the algorithm — for the person comparing you against a competitor whose last post was 2023.
Fix Your NAP Before Anything Else
Name, Address, Phone. It has to be byte-identical everywhere it appears: your website footer, your Business Profile, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, every directory you’ve ever been listed on.
“Mukkam, Kozhikode” in one place and “Mukkam, Calicut” in another is a real problem, not pedantry. Search engines use consistency as a confidence signal — when they can’t reconcile three versions of your address, they trust all three less.
- Search your business name and check the first three pages for stale listings.
- Fix or claim every listing that has an old address or a disconnected number.
- Pick one format — Calicut or Kozhikode, not both — and use it everywhere from now on.
The single most common local SEO problem I find in Kerala isn’t missing content or weak links. It’s an old phone number on a directory nobody remembers creating, quietly contradicting everything else.
Build Pages for Places, Not Just Services
Listing “we serve Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur and Wayanad” in a sentence on your homepage does close to nothing. A search for “interior designer in Malappuram” needs a page that is genuinely about Malappuram to have something to rank.
The trap here is obvious and I’ll name it: do not clone one page four times with the town name swapped. That gets treated as doorway pages and it can hurt you. A location page earns its place when it has local work, local photographs, local specifics — travel times, areas covered, projects actually completed there.
If you can’t write three genuinely different paragraphs about working in that town, you don’t need the page yet.
Reviews, Handled Properly
- Ask at the moment of relief. Right after the problem is solved is when people say yes — not a week later by email.
- Send the direct review link. Every extra step loses roughly half the people.
- Reply to all of them. Including the good ones. Especially the bad ones, calmly and factually.
- Aim for steady, not sudden. Two reviews a month for a year beats twenty-four in one week, which looks exactly like what it is.
- Never buy them. They get filtered, and the risk to the profile is not worth it.
The Technical Layer
These take an afternoon with a developer and they punch far above their weight:
- LocalBusiness schema with your NAP, hours and geographic coordinates, so machines read your details as data rather than guessing from prose.
- An embedded Google map on your contact page, pointing at the verified profile.
- Mobile page speed. Most local searches happen on a phone, frequently on mobile data. Test on 4G, not your office wifi.
- Clickable phone numbers. A
tel:link, not text someone has to copy. - Location in your title tags on the pages that matter, phrased for humans rather than stuffed.
The Part Most Checklists Skip
Increasingly, “where do I find X in Calicut” gets answered by an AI assistant rather than a map pack. That means the same structured, factual, plainly-stated information that helps you rank locally is now also what determines whether you get mentioned in an AI answer at all.
The good news: there’s no separate workstream here. Accurate NAP, real schema, specific facts stated plainly — the local SEO fundamentals and the AI search fundamentals are largely the same fundamentals. Doing this properly future-proofs you almost by accident.
What to Do This Week
Don’t try to do all of it. Claim and complete your Business Profile, fix your NAP everywhere it’s wrong, and ask your five most recent happy customers for a review. That’s a week’s work at most, it costs nothing, and for a lot of businesses in Kozhikode it’s the difference between showing up in the map pack and not.
Then come back for the rest. If you’d rather have someone work through it with you, get in touch — or start with the auditand find out which of these you’ve already got right.
